Roll-off containers for Taunton homes and jobsites
Taunton is a city, not a town, and it is the county seat of Bristol County. That distinction matters more here than anywhere else on our list. A city has a mayor and a council, a full-time building department, its own inspectional services, and a scale of commercial and industrial activity that a South Shore town of eight thousand people does not. Founded in 1637 and incorporated as a city in 1864, it made silver on an industrial scale — hence the Silver City — and it has been putting a Christmas display on Taunton Green for well over a century.
Nineteen miles south-west of our yard, it is the furthest regular run we make, and we make it because Taunton generates the kind of work a city generates. Multi-family turnovers in nineteenth-century housing. Mill and commercial building fit-outs in the old industrial districts along the Taunton River. Municipal and institutional clear-outs. Roofs, cellars and estates in a housing stock that runs from Federal and Greek Revival through the mill-era workers’ housing of Weir Village and Whittenton to post-war and modern subdivision building at the edges. The city is also a genuine regional disposal outlet in its own right, which shortens some hauls considerably.
None of that changes the state rules. The disposal bans at 310 CMR 19.017 are the longest list in the country and they apply in a city exactly as in a village: leaves since 1991, yard waste since 1992, metal and asphalt pavement, brick and concrete since 2006, clean gypsum wallboard since 2011, mattresses and textiles since 1 November 2022. A mixed demolition load is legal so long as it reaches a permitted processor, and that processor has to hit a 20 percent separation rate in 2025 and 2026. The fire chief is the issuing authority for an overnight container over six cubic yards under 527 CMR 1.00, ten feet from combustible walls.
What changes in a city is the street. Downtown Taunton and the older village centres have narrow lots, granite kerbing, parking pressure and buildings hard against the pavement, and a container set there is a scheduled operation rather than a drop.
What we know about working in Taunton
Treat a Taunton job as a city job. Ask the city about the street before you assume a set-down, plan the fire permit rather than discovering it, and expect the older districts to need a scout. In the downtown and in Weir Village, Whittenton and Oakland, lots are narrow, many buildings have no usable drive at all, and the practical choice is often a container in the street or a container on a lot two doors down. We need ten feet from combustible walls and openings, twenty feet back from an intersection, ten feet from a hydrant, no obstruction of egress or fire apparatus access, and the top of the box at least five feet below any window. On the material side, a nineteenth-century mill or multi-family building coming apart produces plaster, lath, old flooring, cast iron and, until it is ruled out, suspect material: an asbestos survey under 310 CMR 7.15 is required before demolition or renovation, the demolition dust notification uses form AQ 06 under 310 CMR 7.09 with ten working days and a hundred dollar fee, exempt under twenty dwelling units, and contractors are licensed by the Department of Labor Standards under 454 CMR 28.00 rather than by MassDEP. Lead is the other one. Pre-1978 housing triggers the Massachusetts Lead Law, administered by the state Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, and it sits on top of the federal renovation rule rather than replacing it. For sizing, a commercial fit-out generally takes a 30 on a swap; a triple- or two-family gut takes a 20 to a 30 per unit; masonry and plaster go in a smaller box because of weight. See our size guide if you want the volumes side by side.

Getting a truck to you
Route 24 south from the Route 27 interchange, then Route 44 west, is the standard run and takes about forty minutes from the yard in ordinary traffic. Route 138 south through Easton and Raynham is the surface alternative and serves the northern approaches into the city. For the industrial ground on the northern and eastern sides we come in off Interstate 495. Because it is our longest regular run we schedule Taunton deliveries and swaps in blocks rather than singly, so early notice helps a great deal. Before we book we want the address and the district, whether the box goes on a lot or in the street, the width of the approach, the age and use of the building, and whether the load is fit-out, demolition, household or masonry.
Routes we run: Route 24 south from the Route 27 interchange to the Taunton exits, Route 44 west from Route 24 into the middle of the city, Route 138 south through Easton and Raynham into the city, Interstate 495 for the northern and eastern industrial ground.

Permits, streets and placement in Taunton
On a private driveway in Taunton the placement question is not a city one, it is a state fire code one, and that surprises nearly everybody. 527 CMR 1.00, the Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code, Table 1.12.8.5 lists “rubbish containers > 6 cubic yards” as a permitted activity, with the head of the fire department as the issuing authority. Every roll-off we run is over six cubic yards, so a permit from the local fire chief applies to a container left overnight anywhere in Massachusetts, on private property as much as on public. The exemption is narrow: §1.12.8.5.1 excuses a container delivered and removed within a single business day, and §1.12.8.5.2 requires the container to be marked with the name and emergency telephone number of the company, which ours are. The placement rules Massachusetts fire departments publish under NFPA 1 Chapter 19 are stricter than the national ones most guides copy: at least 10 feet from combustible walls, openings or overhangs — not the 5 feet in the International Fire Code — no closer than 20 feet to an intersection, no closer than 10 feet to a hydrant, and where the box sits beside a building, the top of it at least 5 feet below any window. It must not block egress or fire-apparatus access, or sit under a fire escape, and no flammable or combustible liquids go in it. Because the permit is issued locally, the answer follows the address rather than the county: it is the fire department covering Taunton you are asking, and it is a short call. In Brockton that is Fire Prevention on 508-583-2933. For a container that has to sit in the public way there is no published City of Brockton container permit — the DPW publishes a Street Opening Permit and a Public Works Construction License, which cover street openings and driveway cuts rather than obstructions — so start with DPW Engineering on 508-580-7139 and ask. Sidewalks, hydrants and fire lanes stay clear either way. Sort the approval before you book the delivery. It is a ten-minute call that saves a week.
Two more rules reach every job we run, and both are state rules rather than local ones. The first is asbestos, and Massachusetts splits it between two agencies. MassDEP holds the air-quality side: 310 CMR 7.15 requires a licensed inspector to survey any building with suspect asbestos-containing material before demolition or renovation, and the separate construction and demolition dust notification is 310 CMR 7.09, form AQ 06 — ten working days ahead, exempt under 20 dwelling units, $100. Licensing of asbestos contractors, supervisors, workers and inspectors belongs to the Department of Labor Standards under 454 CMR 28.00, not to MassDEP. The owner-occupied single-family carve-out does not cover taking down more than 100 square feet of exterior cement-asbestos shingle, which is a real trap on an older Taunton siding or roofing job. We cannot take asbestos-containing material in any container. Anything built before 1978 also carries lead paint, and the Massachusetts Lead Law sits on top of the federal RRP rule, administered by the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program on (800) 532-9571. The second rule is the disposal ban list, which is the longest in the country: 310 CMR 19.017 bans leaves, yard waste, metal, asphalt pavement, brick and concrete, clean gypsum wallboard, cathode ray tubes, mattresses and textiles among others, from transfer as well as from burial, and both the generator and the hauler are liable. That is why we ask what is going in the box before we quote, and it is not fussiness. Before anything is dug, trenched or a stump pulled, call Dig Safe on 811 or 888-344-7233, as M.G.L. c.82 §40 requires, with enforcement by the Department of Public Utilities Pipeline Safety Division on (617) 305-3537. Our permit and placement guide walks through the whole process, and collection, drop-off and bulk-item details are published by the City of Brockton.
The ground is the other local variable, and here it is the frost line that decides both the container size and the approach. Massachusetts sets a 48-inch frost depth statewide, so footings in Taunton reach four feet regardless of what sits on top — and once the hole is that deep, a full basement costs almost nothing more, which is why the pre-war housing here is essentially all full-basement. Two practical consequences follow. A cleanout starts a floor lower than a sizing guide written for the south would assume: the basement and the attic are the job, and what comes up the bulkhead stairs is storm windows, paint tins, furniture, a workbench and thirty years of boxes. And frost heave, the spring thaw and plain groundwater keep the heavy work coming — footing and foundation spoil, broken concrete and brick out of a cellar floor or a front walk, plaster off a gutted two-family, and wet basement contents after water has come in. All of that is heavy for its volume, so it rides in a small container, often in two hauls rather than one big box. Access moves with the season as well: snowbanks and the plough windrow narrow a drive that took a 30 yard in October, and on the gravel and dirt approaches out on the rural edges we would rather move you a day than leave ruts through soft spring ground. Where it all ends up is the part people assume and get wrong. There is no landfill and no municipal transfer station in Brockton. A mixed demolition load is perfectly legal in one box — you do not have to sort it on the job site — but it has to go to a permitted C&D processing facility held to the state Minimum Performance Standard, 20 percent diversion through 2025 and 2026, rising to 25 percent by 2030, and the one thing to keep out of the load is clean gypsum wallboard, which has to be removed before transfer. Clean metal and clean wood are worth separating for the same reason. Paint, solvents, automotive fluids, batteries and pool chemicals never ride in a container: Brockton residents take those to the Recycle Depot, 300 Oak Hill Way, Monday to Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm, which handles paint and household chemicals 1 April to 31 October only and runs a free Paint Swap Shed — it is residents-only, and it takes no construction debris. Every town around us answers this differently, because Massachusetts has 351 cities and towns and no county layer above them doing waste, so the answer changes at the town line rather than the county line.

Dumpster Rental in Taunton — FAQs
Do you come this far south from Brockton?
Yes, regularly. Taunton is about nineteen miles from our Montello Street yard, roughly forty minutes down Route 24 and across on Route 44, and it is our longest routine run. Because of the distance we prefer to schedule Taunton deliveries and swaps in blocks, so calling a few days ahead gets you a better slot than calling on the morning. Same-day is sometimes possible but it is not something we will promise for Taunton the way we would for Avon or Montello. Tell us the district and the access and we will fit it in properly.
There is no driveway. Can the container sit on the street?
In the older districts that is often the only option, and it needs arranging in advance. The state fire code requires a permit from the fire chief for any container over six cubic yards left overnight, and Massachusetts departments enforce the NFPA placement rules with it: ten feet from combustible walls and openings, ten feet from a hydrant, twenty feet back from an intersection, the top of the box five feet below any window, nothing blocking egress or fire apparatus access, and the hauler’s name and emergency number on the container. Ask the city about the street itself as well.
What do I need before gutting an old multi-family here?
Two surveys and a permit conversation. Massachusetts requires a licensed asbestos inspector to survey a building with suspect material before demolition or renovation under 310 CMR 7.15, and the separate demolition dust notification goes in on form AQ 06 under 310 CMR 7.09, ten working days, a hundred dollars, exempt under twenty dwelling units. Anything built before 1978 also brings the Massachusetts Lead Law into play alongside the federal renovation rule. Asbestos cannot go in a container at any time. Once those are settled, plan a 20 to a 30 per unit for plaster, lath and flooring.
How quickly can you deliver a dumpster to Taunton?
Taunton is about 19 miles south-west of our Montello Street yard, so it is a routine run for us. Same-day delivery is usually possible if you call before about 11am, and next morning otherwise. The week after a nor’easter or a hard wind event can stretch that, and so can the spring thaw when half the city opens a wet basement at once. We will tell you honestly when you call.
Do you charge extra to deliver to Taunton?
No. Taunton sits inside our standard service area and the flat rate is the same as it is in Brockton. Delivery, pickup, your rental window and disposal up to the agreed tonnage are all included in the number we quote you.
What size dumpster do most Taunton customers take?
A 20 yard is the most common by a wide margin — it suits kitchen guts, multi-room renovations and a full basement and attic cleanout in a two-family, which is where most of the volume in this market actually lives. But if you are stripping shingle off a roof, breaking out a front walk, a patio slab or a cellar floor, or hauling footing and foundation spoil off a repair job, size DOWN to a 10 yard heavy container and take two hauls — that material hits the weight limit long before it fills the box.
